The horse-drawn era of San Francisco fire-fighting history was from 1849 to 1922. Getting fire-fighting equipment to the fire was a challenge with San Francisco's many steep hills. The Museum displays include many examples of the apparatus horses pulled to the fires. At one time, the San Francisco Fire Department had 450 horses. There were regulations regarding the care of the horses. The Museum displays also include examples of the equipment used to care for their horses. The 1895 Order 1 journal entry was relative to attending horses of the Department. Click here to see Journal Entries.
